The Truth About Return Policies

September 5th, 2008

Prospective clients ask us from time to time about our return policy. Our answer is simple: “If the product is
damaged or defective in any way, we will ask you to please refuse it at the time of delivery.”

We then sometimes get asked the following, “What happens if I change my mind after the item arrives into my home or office?”

Our answer again is simple, “Unfortunately, we do not have a Return Policy for our items.” In this post, we will attempt
to explain why we do not have one.

Let’s assume that a person from New Jersey is purchasing a dresser that costs $1,000 and that this item is located in North Carolina.
Delivering this dresser inside this person’s home in New Jersey costs $200. The total for this transaction would be $1,200.
Let’s assume that this person has been told by their salesperson that the company did have a “Return Policy on all items.”
Sure does sound great, doesn’t it? Well, it really does sound better than it is.

Here’s a quick overview of what will happen once a client decides to return an item with any of the Return Policies
that we have come acrosS:

- The client does have to pay for the delivery of the piece into their home.
- The client does have to pay for the delivery of the piece back to the manufacturer or seller.
- The client does have to pay the restocking fee on the piece or pieces that they have purchased. (usually about 40%)

Going back to the client in New Jersey, let’s assume that she did try to return the dresser using one of the many Return Policies out there.

Here’s the math for such a transaction:

- Purchasing Price including delivery: $1,200
- Payment for delivery: $200.
- Payment for return: $200
- Restocking Fee: $400

Assuming that the client in New Jersey did decide to return the dresser, she will only be refunded $400 ($1,200 - $200 - $200 - $400) out of her
$1,200 purchase.

Sure did sound like a much better deal than it actually was.
